Pick a scenario to see how iron flows, gets blocked, or builds up.
Scenario 1 · Normal circuit
The normal iron circuit
Iron is absorbed in the gut, enters the bloodstream via ferroportin, binds to transferrin, and reaches cells to produce energy. The liver stores the excess as ferritin. This circuit is orchestrated by a hepatic hormone: hepcidin.
