The hepcidin axis: iron's conductor
Three physiological states that decide whether iron flows, gets blocked, or is mobilised.

Normal iron balance
The liver senses iron through the BMP6-hemojuvelin-SMAD1/5/8 pathway. It produces hepcidin in proportion. Hepcidin binds intestinal and macrophage ferroportin, limiting iron export into plasma. Transferrin then carries iron to target cells.
