Adaptogen
Term introduced by Soviet toxicologist Nikolai Lazarev in 1958 for natural substances capable of increasing non-specific resistance to stress. Brekhman and Dardymov (1969) formalised three criteria: non-toxic at normal doses, non-specific stress action, normalising effect on disturbed physiological functions.
