ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid)
Essential omega-3 fatty acid of plant origin (flax, walnuts, hemp). Precursor of DHA and EPA, but the conversion rate is low: 5 to 10% to EPA, less than 0.5% to DHA in adults. This rate is further reduced by a diet rich in omega-6. Plant sources of omega-3 do not replace oily fish for DHA intake. Not to be confused with linoleic acid (omega-6).
