Gut-skin axis
Bidirectional communication network between the gut microbiome and the skin, involving immune, inflammatory and metabolic pathways. A dysbiotic microbiome can trigger systemic inflammation that manifests on the skin (acne, eczema, psoriasis). Conversely, skin exposure to UVB can positively modulate the gut microbiome via vitamin D production. A central concept in modern functional dermatology.
