Berberine

Yellow plant alkaloid extracted from several plants (Berberis vulgaris, Coptis chinensis, Hydrastis canadensis). It activates AMPK, a key enzyme in cellular energy regulation, giving it beneficial effects on blood sugar, lipid profile and gut microbiome. Its glucose-regulating effects are sometimes compared to those of metformin. Often studied in the context of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and gut dysbiosis. Cautions: possible drug interactions, not recommended during pregnancy.
