Cytoplasm

Gel-like medium filling the interior of the cell, between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. It contains organelles (mitochondria, lysosomes, reticulum) bathed in the cytosol, a fluid rich in enzymes, ions and signalling molecules. Most steps of autophagy are triggered inside the cytoplasm.
