FADS2

Gene encoding delta-6 desaturase, the first enzyme of the conversion chain for both omega families. It transforms linoleic acid into GLA on the omega-6 side, and ALA into stearidonic acid on the omega-3 side. It is often the rate-limiting step of the entire chain. An unfavourable variant blocks the conversion from the very start.
