Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus)
Mediterranean shrub whose fruits are used in female phytotherapy. Its active compounds (agnusides, casticin) bind to pituitary D2 dopaminergic receptors, inhibiting prolactin secretion. This action explains its well-established use recognised by the EMA in premenstrual syndrome and irregular cycles. Contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding and with hormonal contraception without medical advice.
