    HMGB1

    High Mobility Group Box 1. A nuclear protein that, when released from the cell during stress or cell death, acts as an inflammatory alarm signal (alarmin). It binds notably to the RAGE receptor and activates NF-κB, helping to sustain the chronic inflammation seen in diabetes, atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases.
