IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor 1)
Growth factor produced mainly by the liver in response to growth hormone and insulin spikes. It activates androgenic receptors in sebaceous glands, increasing sebum production. Its stimulation by a high glycaemic index diet and dairy proteins (via the mTORC1 pathway) is a central mechanism of nutritional acne documented in numerous randomised controlled trials.
