    Melanin

Natural pigment responsible for the colour of skin, hair and eyes, produced by melanocytes in the epidermis under the action of tyrosinase. It absorbs UV rays and protects keratinocyte DNA against mutations. Its localised excess produces pigmentation spots (melasma, lentigines). Its production can be stimulated by chronic inflammation or hepatic dysfunction.
