Collagen peptides
Collagen fragments obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis, with a molecular weight low enough (1,000 to 5,000 Da) to be absorbed intestinally. Unlike native collagen, hydrolysed collagen peptides are bioavailable and can stimulate endogenous collagen synthesis by dermal fibroblasts. Randomised clinical trials have shown improvement in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle reduction after 8 to 12 weeks of supplementation at 2.5 to 10 g per day. Quality depends on source (bovine, marine, porcine), hydrolysis method and amino acid profile, particularly hydroxyproline and glycine.
Never use a dietary supplement without the advice of a healthcare professional. Overdoses as well as deficiencies are not without risk.
