Senile plaques

Abnormal deposits of beta-amyloid protein that accumulate between neurons in the brain, characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Their accumulation disrupts neuron communication and triggers a local inflammatory response. Formation begins 10 to 20 years before first clinical symptoms.
