Cognitive reserve
Neuronal and functional capital built over a lifetime through education, learning, bilingualism, social life and complex activities. It allows the brain to compensate for lesions by mobilising alternative circuits, delaying symptom onset. It does not erase pathology, but explains the cognitive resilience seen at autopsy in heavily lesioned brains from people who showed no dementia during life.
