Staphylococcus aureus

Opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that massively colonises damaged skin in atopic dermatitis (up to 90% of lesions). It produces toxins (superantigens) that worsen skin inflammation and weaken the skin barrier. Its proliferation is promoted by a poorly diversified cutaneous microbiome. Restoring cutaneous microbial diversity is a promising therapeutic approach.
