    VDR (Vitamin D Receptor)

Nuclear receptor expressed in intestinal epithelial cells and keratinocytes. It is activated by vitamin D produced by the skin under the effect of UVB rays. Its activation modulates gut microbiome composition and regulates cutaneous barrier immunity. A molecular link explaining why sun exposure and vitamin D supplementation positively influence both the gut microbiome and skin health.
