HPA axis

Central neuroendocrine stress response system (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal). Under stress: hypothalamus secretes CRH, pituitary produces ACTH, adrenal glands produce cortisol. Chronic stress leads to prolonged axis activation with consequences for immunity, metabolism, memory and sleep.
