Confounding bias
Distortion in study results caused by a third variable (the confounding factor) associated with both the studied exposure and the measured outcome. In nutritional epidemiology, confounding bias is particularly common: people who consume many fresh fruits often have other favourable health behaviours making it difficult to isolate the specific effect of fruits. Epidemiological studies use statistical adjustment methods to attempt to control these confounding factors.
