Hepatic fructose
Fructose reaching the liver after intestinal absorption. Unlike glucose, fructose bypasses blood glucose regulation mechanisms and is massively captured by hepatocytes without enzymatic limitation. In excess, it is converted to fatty acids via de novo lipogenesis, contributing to fat accumulation in the liver and increased circulating triglycerides. This mechanism explains why fructose from sugary drinks has different metabolic effects than that from whole fruits, where fibre limits its hepatic flux.
