HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)
Glucose-fructose syrup derived from industrial transformation of corn starch, widely used as a sweetener in sugary drinks, confectionery and ultra-processed foods. Its fructose content varies between 42% and 55% depending on formulation. Unlike fructose from whole fruits, HFCS is consumed in large quantities without the fruit's fibrous nutritive matrix, promoting rapid absorption and massive fructose flux to the liver. Regular consumption is associated with increased blood triglycerides, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome risk.
