Phage therapy

Therapeutic use of strictly lytic bacteriophages, selected in the laboratory (phagogram) against the bacterial strain identified in a patient. Continuously practised since 1923 at the Eliava Institute in Tbilisi (Georgia) and the Hirszfeld Institute in Wrocław (Poland). In France, the PHAGEinLYON programme at Hospices Civils de Lyon obtained in May 2026 a manufacturing authorisation for Pharmaceutical Raw Material (MPUP), a European first for a public healthcare establishment. Current framework: compassionate use in hospital settings, primarily for complex bone and joint infections.
