    Your natural GLP-1: the hormone your gut already makes

    Ozempic didn't invent anything: it copies a hormone your gut secretes after every meal. Understanding how your endogenous GLP-1 works is understanding why some meals satisfy and others don't.

    Chapter 01

    Where GLP-1 is produced

    GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) is produced by the L-cells of the ileum and proximal colon. These cells are in direct contact with what you eat: they detect fibres, short-chain fatty acids, and amino acids, and release the hormone in response.

    Once in the blood, GLP-1 does three things: it slows gastric emptying, it acts on hypothalamic satiety centres, and it enhances insulin secretion in the presence of glucose. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) copies this same hormone in a stable, long-acting form.

    Why your meals don't always trigger the signal

    Endogenous GLP-1 is secreted based on what the L-cells encounter. A sugary liquid, a juice or a smoothie barely stimulates these cells: the sugar is absorbed too far upstream, without reaching the ileum. The result: satiety never comes, or comes too late.

    Conversely, soluble fermentable fibres (oats, pulses, barley, psyllium), proteins and healthy fats reach the ileum and trigger sustained release. A study in Nutrients (2024) shows that a protein-fibre breakfast increases postprandial GLP-1 secretion by 40 to 60% compared with a sugary breakfast of the same calories.

    Chapter 03

    Fermentable fibres: the best-documented lever

    Fermentable fibres (oat beta-glucans, apple pectins, artichoke inulin, pulse GOS) are broken down by the colonic microbiota into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs): butyrate, propionate, acetate. These SCFAs directly stimulate the L-cells via FFAR2 and FFAR3 receptors.

    Intervention data converge: 10 to 15 g of fermentable fibres per day, sustained for at least 8 weeks, significantly raise baseline and postprandial GLP-1 levels (Advances in Nutrition meta-analysis, 2023).

    Chapter 04

    The role of the microbiota

    No rich microbiota, no SCFAs. A gut impoverished by repeated antibiotics, ultra-processed food or chronic stress produces fewer SCFAs, and therefore weaker GLP-1 signalling. The result: hunger that returns quickly, regardless of calories consumed.

    Restoring microbial diversity (varied fibres, fermented foods, reduction of simple sugars) is a structural prerequisite. Not a shortcut, but a long-term lever that semaglutide does not replace.

    Chapter 05

    What caffeine and coffee add

    Coffee, independently of caffeine, stimulates GLP-1 secretion in non-diabetic individuals (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2023). The effect is modest but measurable. It does not replace fibres, but adds to them.

    Conversely, alcohol reduces postprandial secretion and amplifies late hunger. An alcoholic aperitif before a meal measurably increases the amount eaten afterwards.

    Intervention studies observe measurable rises in baseline levels from 4 weeks of high fermentable-fibre intake, stabilising around 8 to 12 weeks.
    Which foods work best?
    Whole oats, pulses (lentils, chickpeas), artichokes, leeks, onions, apples, barley, psyllium powder. Proteins (eggs, fish, tofu) and healthy fats (avocado, nuts) amplify the effect.
    Do fruit juices stimulate GLP-1?
    Very little. Free sugar is absorbed in the duodenum without reaching the L-cells of the ileum. A whole fruit (with its fibres) triggers a much larger secretion.
    Does coffee really help satiety?
    Modestly. The documented effect is real but small compared with fermentable fibres. Coffee can be an adjuvant, not a main strategy.
