    Alzheimer's research moves fast, and headlines often move faster than the evidence. Each entry below sums up a recent finding, then answers the only two questions that matter: what does it change today, and what does it open up for tomorrow.

      A form of beta-amyloid able to trigger accumulation

      In July 2026, Japanese researchers at the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry in Tokyo identified a specific form of beta-amyloid protein capable of triggering the accumulation process behind Alzheimer's disease. Published in Brain Communications, the study shows that this form, when injected into mice, causes an accumulation similar to that observed in the brains of patients with the disease.

      At this stage the finding remains basic research, not an available tool. The substance can currently only be detected in post-mortem brain tissue, and no screening test exists in living people. Researchers are working on non-invasive detection methods and on candidate molecules to block this mechanism, with an estimated horizon of around ten years before any preventive treatment.

      What it changes today: nothing in current follow-up or screening. What it opens up for tomorrow: a serious lead towards intervening earlier than existing treatments, which act once plaques have already formed.
