    Moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise triggers an acute release of and in frontostriatal circuits, with a measurable attentional effect in the 1 to 3 hours following the session. This specific prefrontal stimulation adds a cognitive benefit that purely repetitive sports (solo running, long-distance cycling) do not provide to the same extent.

    This does not invalidate running or swimming: they are excellent emotional stabilisers and effective levers for regularity. The combination (one team sport and one individual sport) optimises variety and engagement, which is also an important cognitive lever for a brain that disengages quickly on the repetitive.

    The cognitive benefits of exercise assume a terrain that keeps up. Low brings exertion fatigue that degrades both session and recovery. Crashed sustains muscle tension and degraded sleep that wipe out the gain. Unstable glycaemia produces crashes during or after effort that worsen emotional rebound.

    That is why an adult with who struggles to keep a sports routine does not necessarily lack will: the biological fuel is sometimes not in place. Testing before pushing is often more rewarding than doubling session frequency.

    The brain depends heavily on novelty and contextual anchoring. A fixed, invariant sports routine wears thin fast. A few principles that hold over time:

    • Vary formats across the week (cardio, strength, team).
    • Anchor in a stable context (same slot, same gym, same partner) to minimise start-up friction.
    • Externalise the decision: subscription, coach, group; do not leave the 'do I go or not' arbitration to a tired .
    • Measure what counts: not performance, but frequency and felt effect on attention, mood, sleep.

    Regularity is not a character trait. It is an architecture that gets built.
